Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) represent the rich and diverse body of knowledge developed in India over thousands of years. Rooted in the country’s ancient civilization, IKS encompasses a wide range of disciplines including philosophy, spirituality, science, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, arts, culture, ethics, and environmental studies. This knowledge was traditionally transmitted through oral traditions, scriptures, practices, and the guru–shishya parampara.
IKS is holistic in nature, emphasizing the harmony between human beings, society, nature, and the cosmos. Systems such as Ayurveda and Yoga focus on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, while Indian philosophical traditions promote ethical living, self-inquiry, and social responsibility. Classical texts like the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihasas, and Shastras reflect India’s deep intellectual heritage and scientific temper.
In the contemporary context, Indian Knowledge Systems are gaining renewed importance through educational reforms such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages the integration of indigenous knowledge with modern education. By studying IKS, students develop cultural awareness, critical thinking, and a value-based approach to life, while also appreciating India’s significant contributions to global knowledge.
